The First Week of 2nd Grade

Whew!  What a fast week this was, and this is one group of hard working 2nd graders!  We've been learning so much about how 2nd grade works!

Each day we've continued to practice our expectations for read to self and build our stamina.  As 2nd grade read to self experts, we know that in order to do our best reading during this time we need to find a good spot, get started right away, and stay focused on our reading.  The students were eager to learn about our special chairs and pillow spots.  Who doesn't love to read in a comfy spot?!  We also learned this week how to shop for books in our classroom library.  It is always exciting for the students to get into our classroom library and start picking out books they love!  On Friday, read to someone was introduced.

We started our math stations this week as well.  Each day the students will be rotating through 3 stations: teacher lesson, assignment station, and partner station.  The partner station could be playing a partner game, reviewing math concepts with your partner's help, or using the i-pad or computer.  They have been rotating through these stations like pros!

We've continued to work on our books about where we've been all summer.  We started the process with a bubble map for our ideas, and then worked on putting those ideas into sentences.  After conferencing with me, the students are putting those sentences into their books and illustrating.  I can't wait for them to finish their books and share with their classmates all their ideas and illustrations!

They've also been creating an art project inspired by the book "Monsters Don't Eat Broccoli" by Barbara Jean Hicks.  Getting out those new watercolor paints is so fun!
